What is TRIO UBMS?
Established in 1964, TRIO began as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty.
The TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program is a federally funded initiative designed to empower first-generation, income-eligible high school students to realize their full academic potential—especially in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Hosted by New Covenant Community Development Center, our mission is to prepare students for success in college and beyond by providing rigorous academic support, hands-on STEM experiences, and holistic guidance throughout their high school journey.
At TRIO UBMS, we believe that every student deserves access to quality education and the resources necessary to thrive. Through year-round tutoring, mentoring, college preparation workshops, career exploration, cultural enrichment trips, and immersive summer academies, we strive to cultivate a community of curious, motivated, and resilient young scholars.

"Together Reaching Innovative Opportunities"
Bishop Osco E. Gardin Jr. is a visionary leader, advocate, and community builder whose life’s work centers on uplifting and empowering those often left unheard. In August 2009, he founded the New Covenant Community Development Center (NCCDC)—a nonprofit organization dedicated to community uplift, education, and holistic development. His mission was clear: to create lasting impact by advocating for individuals with unique needs and providing resources that transform lives.
Under Bishop Gardin’s leadership, NCCDC has become a driving force for positive change across the region. His commitment to equity and education laid the foundation for vital programs like TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS), which extend his vision by preparing first-generation and underrepresented students for success in higher education—especially in the STEM fields.
With a passion for service and a heart for the people, Bishop Gardin continues to inspire a legacy of compassion, resilience, and excellence. His belief in the power of education and community remains the cornerstone of everything we do.
Eligibility and Program Criteria
The TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program is committed to supporting students who are ready to take their education to the next level—especially those with an interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). To be considered for participation in the program, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

Be a potential first-generation college student, meaning neither parent has earned a four-year (bachelor’s) degree, or meet federal low-income guidelines.

Attend a Union County Public School, with priority given to students at our two target schools: Monroe High School and Forest Hills High School.

Have an expressed interest in pursuing a college degree—students interested in STEM fields are encouraged, but those with passions in the arts, humanities, or other areas are welcome and supported as well.

Hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher at the time of application.

Demonstrate motivation, responsibility, and a commitment to academic growth.

Note: While our focus is on Monroe and Forest Hills High Schools, we proudly accept students from any Union County Public School who meet the eligibility criteria.

Earn Stipends Throughout the Year

Summer Experience
Each summer, students participate in a 6-week portion of our program where they attend Wingate University, engage in STEM projects, and experience life on a college campus. This immersive experience boosts confidence, builds friendships, and prepares students for what lies ahead.
